Hello MRO,
go into the user editor and give yourself time. check your sl , credits, and minutes. make sure scfg isnt open. open scfg and make sure your new user values are decent. create a new user via telnet
to test it.
That is what I have done. After logging in I am logged off and looking at my (or another) account in uedit the security level, password and time fields are blank.
I can update those fields in uedit and then log in again briefly before being logged out because "Time's up."
I can't seem to get passed this.

wow something is seriously screwed up then.
if you want i can teamviewer you while you watch.
the session key only works once.
i sent a msg to sysop on trmb.ca:2030
This is not an upgrade from 3.19. I just grabbed the source with git so it is purely 3.20. Would that make a difference?
Possibly, but I couldn't guess/say *why* it makes a difference yet.
If you use a user editor to set the user's level correctly (e.g. 99 for the sysop), and then login, do you see anything different in the terminal server log output? Which user editor are you using to set the security level?
If you can't login, how are you able to run uedit?
I can't seem to get passed this.
I'm committed to helping you find the solution too as it's very likely a bug introduced in v3.20, but only manifesting on your system/configuration for some reason.
The data/user/user.tab file is plain text and if you compare before/after logging in or editing with a user editor, that may be very helpful in root-causing the issue.

Yes, if I set the security level to 99 and set the password I can log in briefly but am logged off after a few seconds. I just see "Time's up." and then I am disconnected.
I am using "exec/uedit" from the /sbbs directory.

I appreciate it.

The issue seems to be that the user.tab file is missing the security level, minutes, and password info. Possibly others, I am not sure.
I can enter those values with uedit but they go missing shortly after login.
Can you diff the files or provide them to me as "before" and "after"
for comparison? This might be me the clue I need to know what's
happening to it.

Sorry, I don't have a diff but if you grab..
http://trmb.ca/usertab.zip
It contains user.tab.orig as sbbs saves it, and user.tab.uedit as uedit saves it after I have added level 99, 500 minutes, all
the
exemptions and the password.
I am using "exec/uedit" from the /sbbs directory.
okay i didnt know you were using a linux version of synchronet.
did you say that in the beginning and i didnt catch that?
you should reset all your permissions and take ownership.
I installed a fresh v3.20a on a new Linux system and did not encounter this issue:
Maybe try deleting your data/user/* files and logging on as new again and immediately save a copy of the created user.tab file (as soon as its created during the new user process) and share that with me.

Sorry DM, I didn't mean to send you on one of my rodeo's.

I am not sure why but after deleting data/user/* and creating a new account things are working normally. Maybe I didn't have enough of the initial setup done when I first logged in.
The new user.tab looks a fair bit different, it is here if you'd like to look.

Yeah, it looks normal now. I wonder if you maybe you had run 'jsexec update' or 'upgrade_to_v320' as part of your installation? That's not a normal step in installation and could maybe have been an element of creating this scenario.

I haven't run 'upgrade_to_v320' but I did run 'jsexec update'. That was some hours (maybe 6-24) after the install and initial setup. The update ran successfully but didn't report doing anything.
I had a very light initial setup done, my name and BBS name but not much else. I didn't have my message options or BBSID set at the time when I first logged in.
If you hadn't yet created any users, that might just be the key-clue I needed.

Cool, with that info, I'll see if I can reproduce the symptom.

No, just my own sysop account and guest.

I have changed some of my default login options and am now getting the "Times up." message again.
1. I changed my editor to Syledit.
2. I disabled the spinning pause prompt.
3. I changed the default mail scan to search for new personal messages instead of a new mail scan.
4. I changed the default transfer protocol. I hit "q" at that prompt so there is no default protocol. I do that so I can choose
zmodem when I am remote and local copy when I am local.
I think one of those changes may have caused the issue.

What method did you use to make those changes to your user settings?
Hello Digital,

I was logged in with telnet using plain old telnet, "telnet localhost". That's the way I access the BBS if I am local.
Thanks for your patience and bug report (for ignoring the noise from others offering their unhelpful input).
