• Adding supported_formats to Archive

    From nelgin@VERT/EOTLBBS to Digital Man on Saturday, October 03, 2026 03:50:27
    I'm wanting to add .gz files as supported types for Archive.

    I added gz as a supported type in scfg > File Options

    $ jsexec -n -r 'Archive.supported_formats.forEach(function(f){ print(f); })' zip
    7z
    tgz
    gz

    but I get the following:

    bbs@bbs:/sbbs/mods$ jsexec -n archive read /var/log/sbbs/web.sbbs.log.1.gz !JavaScript /sbbs/exec/archive.js line 49: Error: archive_read_open_filename() returned -30: Unrecognized archive format
    !Module (archive) set exit_code: 1

    I've obviously missed a step but I'm not sure what. Open to suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Howdy,

    "gz" files are not an archive? "gz" is a compression method and represents a single file compressed.

    eg: "tar.gz" is a tar file (an archive), but its been compressed by "gz".

    You're still restricted by what libarchive supports and it doesn't support raw 'gzip' (gz) files.

    You're still restricted by what libarchive supports and it doesn't
    support raw 'gzip' (gz) files. https://github.com/libarchive/libarchive/wiki/LibarchiveFormats

    That's interesting because I'm looking at https://github.com/libarchive/libarchive and it says

    The library also detects and handles any of the following before
    evaluating the archive:

    uuencoded files
    files with RPM wrapper
    ** gzip compression **
    bzip2 compression
    compress/LZW compression
    lzma, lzip, and xz compression
    lz4 compression
    lzop compression
    zstandard compression

    it further states:
    Libarchive's automatic support for decompression can be used without
    archiving by explicitly selecting the "raw" and "empty" formats.

    So in my mind it's saying libarchive should be able to handle gz
    without the need for there being an archive. Am I misreading it?
