    made of MS-DOS was 6.22. Would 7.1 be the DOS layer included with Window 98 or something?

    you can make a boot disk and make sure it has format and fdisk on it.
    format with /s and it will be dos 7

    The win98 boot disk has those utilities

    Some of the utilities that came with prior versions of DOS were no longer available with the DOS 7.x versions that ran under Win9x.

    Many of them were replaced with Windows utilities, which doesn't help if
    you are trying to run a DOS 7.x system without Windows.

    I've been trying to get this thing to work for a few days now, I've reassembled and old machine running MSDOS 6.22. I'm using it also to browse BBS b the way. It's a lot of fun! :0) But do we need a US stick formatted specifically for MSDOS? That seems logical. Because so far, I haven't managed to get my USB stick recognized. What's more, MSDOS can only read partitions up to 2GB, unless I'm mistaken.

    I had already explored FREEDOS once a few years ago. I'll probably install it on another hard disk to see what FREEDOS can do for me. On MSDOS, it's version 6.22, and it's mainly for playing games and launching a few applications. And so the USB would be used to transfer large files. And also to say me: "ok, I managed to get the USB support workingunder MSDOS. Because finally I found it simpler to create a local FTP and retrieve files that way on my MSDOS machine.

    You need a FAT16 partition. Also, to use USB you'll need a driver or bump up

    If you can't find one, I know theres a DOS USB driver @ 2oFB... search funct

    IIRC FreeDOS will suport usb hard drives. Not sure about usb sticks
