Still catching up - been away from QWK packets for a while now. :-)

I'm a gun person. Some would call me a gun nut, I guess, because
I own more than one and I like to carry one with me. I can't carry
at work, but you can bet it's in the truck and I carry when I'm
    not at work.

Because I want to hurt or kill someone? No. It's for protection
ONLY. Mine and my loved ones.

I was also raised to respect guns and treat them like the tools
    that they are.

Do you own more than 100? I ask because I'm at the point where I actually have more guns in my arms room than most gun stores in town. I like to collect them myself. Also like to shoot them, but don't seem to find the time to do that as much as I would like. I've got stuff from .22LR to .50 BMG.

Agreed. There's an internet meme circulating basically a caption that says something along the lines of "When an intruder finally breaks into a gun owners home" and it shows a person in bed with a menacing grin on their face. I despise that meme. Any serious gun owner realizes that the use of the firearm to protect person and property is a regrettable last resort and nothing to smile about.

I was also raised to respect guns and treat them like the tools
    that they are.

Parents were Marine Corps vets. Mother was able to hit a gallon paint can at 20 yards with a 4" .357. Mother bought me my first gun (an Ithaca Model 66 in 20 gauge) when I was 14 years old. I was properly raised to respect firearms and to use them safely and responsibly. This is an education sadly lacking in the youth of today - and probably a significant reason why so many of them are involved in mass shooting incidents....

EXACTLY! And especially as a Christian with a Biblical worldview.
Matthew 10:28 comes to mind, and I have to be able to justify that
with my 'intent to go armed.'

That and, and I hate to be stereotypical here, but video games have
made them 'not really deadly' - just a toy. My first gun that was
MINE was a .22 Browning semi auto when I was seven. Still own it!

Guns are like deodorants in a rural setting.

Just picture this: you have been piling up hay all morning long, both your friends and yourself are sweating like pigs. You all stink.

If somebody dares mentioning he didn't use deodorant that morning, people will think of him he has very poor hygiene and will prety much scream bloody murder because not using deodorant is something dirty unhygienical people do. And the fun part is that if he didn't mention it, nobody would have noticed because they all stink.

Weapons are the same. You might be chilling at a party and somebody brings bread and cheese. Unfortunately, the guy who brought them forgot to also bring a knife to slice them. Then somebody pulls a bushcraft knife from the backpack and suddenly that guy is a fucking murderous monster who has murderous weapons and deserves to be murdered because he is murderous. You know, the same guy who used to be your best friend ever two minutes ago :-)

Yeah, I've read about how NOTHING is legal without a special license,
and you have to keep them locked up at home, AND on the way to and
    from the range?

Wait til you learn the Spanish way.

In Spain you get a gun license for a specific activity, and then you license the gun itself for a particular activity.

So say you want to eat duck and therefore need to hunt for ducks. You get a Gun License for Hunting, then you get a shotgun and then you license the shotgun as a hunting weapon.

Then you get a short barrel revolver for self-protection. You get a Gun License for Self Defense and license the gun as a defense gun. This part is getting imaginative because nobody ever gets this license granted unless they are a politician or soccer player, but you get the idea.

Now imagine you want to participate in some target shooting competition in your area. Well, you are fucked because you aren't licensed for target shooting competitions and you don't have a gun registered as a defense gun.

You can't keep your shotgun under the bar in the tavern you run because your shotgun is not a self-defense weapon (even if you are licensed for self-defense gun ownership). And if you use your shotgun to humanely put down an injured cow in your village you will get charged for illegal ownership and posession of a forbidden weapon because using a weapon for a non licensed purpose is pretty much like using a weapon without license.

Then yes there is all the theatre of having the gun locked in a safe cabinet and most licensing modalities don't allow you to have more than one or two boxes of ammo at home.

    Hello Arelor!

Wait til you learn the Spanish way.

In Spain you get a gun license for a specific activity, and
then you license the gun itself for a particular activity.

Double-licensing? That's interesting. Can the same gun be
licensed for 3 or more different purposes? I suppose the cost
    adds up considerably?

You can't keep your shotgun under the bar in the tavern you
run because your shotgun is not a self-defense weapon (even
if you are licensed for self-defense gun ownership).

Not even if it's in a locked cabinet by regulation?

And if you use your shotgun to humanely put down an injured
cow in your village you will get charged for illegal
ownership and posession of a forbidden weapon because using
a weapon for a non licensed purpose is pretty much like

Wow. Sounds insane. Would your neighbour's snitch on you if you
used a gun for putting down an injured animal? Seems to me

    <snip>

    WOW!!!

I'm in Tennessee, and I thought we were in bad shape because we
are called a constitutional carry state, but the truth is it is
illegal to go armed 'with the intent to be armed' - even on your
own property or in your own home!

So the law says you have a legal defense if you have it and are
not breaking any other laws, etc. It's not the best setup, and the
Republican super majority has failed to correct it the last few
    years.

But my point is, at least I can carry without fear of harrassment,
because it's a normal thing around here. :-)

I am not sure about that one. I have never seen a gun with a multi-type license, though.

run because your shotgun is not a self-defense weapon (even
if you are licensed for self-defense gun ownership).

Not even if it's in a locked cabinet by regulation?

If the gun is licensed for hunting you cannot do anything with it that suggests you are going to use it for anything other than hunting. Using it as a paperweight is already illegal.

And if you use your shotgun to humanely put down an injured
cow in your village you will get charged for illegal
ownership and posession of a forbidden weapon because using
a weapon for a non licensed purpose is pretty much like

I trust my neighbors enough but at some point in the paperwork chain somebody would notice the cow is missing half her head due to a shotgun blast and that would be no bueno for you.
